The future looks bright for Kennedy's girls hockey program despite the loss of four graduating seniors.

The Eagles conclude their 2007-08 season with a 2-1 loss to Woodbury in Section 3AA tournament first-round action Feb. 4.

Kennedy's final record was 9-16-1. The Eagles played a modified Lake Conference schedule and were 1-10 in league play.

Kennedy will return its leading scorer next season. Junior defender/forward Gretchen Mach collected 14 goals and nine assists for 23 points.

However, Kennedy will lose departing senior forward Alysa Haslerud, who was second in scoring with 16 goals and six assists (22 points). Haslerud contributed six game-winning goals.

Another key player the Eagles will have to replace is senior goalie Kari Hunter.

Hunter led state goaltenders with 991 saves in 24 games.  She had a .925 save percentage and had a season-high of 68 saves against Eden Prairie.

Another Kennedy senior Clare Chapman who provided four goals and three assists.

Amanda Olson is the fourth graduating senior.  She had five goals and two assists this season.

"It won't be easy to replace our seniors, especially Hunter who is one of the top goalies in the state," said Kennedy coach Dennis Wineberg.  "But we should do even more as a team next year because most of our returnees have been on the varsity for three seasons."

Kennedy, seeded ninth, gave a strong effort in its season finale before losing 2-1 to eighth-seeded Woodbury in the section playoffs.

Woodbury scored its first goal at 5:13 of the second period and added another goal at 1:03 of the third period.

Kennedy got on the board two minutes later on Gretchen Mach's unassisted goal.

But the Eagles could not come up with the tying goal.  Hunter had another busy night in goal making 61 saves.

Senior Amanda Olson had 5 goals and 2 assists this season.
Senior Clare Chapman had 4 goals and 3 assists this season.

Last year, Kari Hunter, then a junior goaltender for Bloomington Kennedy made headlines by making 165 saves her first three games of the season.  Now a senior, Hunter has posted some incredible numbers again, but this time at the end of her season with only two games remaining.

During her last four games, Hunter made 193 saves out of 209 shots, averaging 48 saves per game with a save percentage of .923.  All four games were against teams in the Lake Conference.

In the first two games, Hunter had 40 saves in Kennedy's 4-3 win over Rosemount and also tallied a rare goalie assist.  Rosemount out-shot Kennedy 43-15, but Hunter held on for the win.  Hunter followed that game with 37 saves, falling to Lakeville South by a score of 4-1.  Lakeville South out-shot Kennedy 41-17.

In the two games that following week, Hunter recorded a remarkable 116 saves on 125 shots, for a save percentage of .928.  She made 51 saves in Kennedy's 3-1 loss to No. 11 Eagan.  Kennedy was out-shot 54-18 and 71-5 in the two games, respectively.

During this stretch, Hunter had a two-period shutout streak of 55 saves.  She stopped all 25 shots in the final period against Apple Valley, followed by 30 saves in the first period against Eagan.  Eagan was awarded their first goal of the game on their 31st and final shot of the first period which was (controversially) ruled that the puck was shot prior to the sound of the period-ending buzzer.

This season, Hunter has stopped 842 of the 905 shots (.930).  She is an extremely smart goaltender with solid fundamentals, great positional play, great hands, quick feet, strong skating skills and the ability to anticipate each shot.

•Goalie is key asset for Kennedy girls hockey squad
Hunter returns after earning all-conference honors last season
GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS
Bloomington Sun-Current - Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007

Kennedy's girls hockey team might surprise a few opponents this season if it can find some scoring punch. The Eagles struggled to a 1-24-1 over-all record last season despite the fact their goalie Kari Hunter was superb in most games.
Hunter is a senior co-captain for Kennedy this season along with senior center Aly Haslerud.
Hunter earned all-conference honors a year ago and Haslerud received All-Lake Conference honorable mention.
"I believe Hunter is the top goalie in the metro area," said Kennedy coach Dennis Wineberg. "Kari had one stretch last season when she stopped 160 shots in three games.
"Kari is quick and smart.  She knows how to position herself to stop shots and will be strong in goal.
"We can be competitive if we manufacture two to three goals per game," the Eagle coach added.
Wineberg considers Haslerud another strong asset heading into the 2007-2008 season. "Aly's work ethic is fantastic," Wineberg said. "She leads by example.
"Aly is a good puck handler.  We are counting on her to put the puck into the net."
Kennedy returns an experienced forward cast.  Back are seniors Clare Chapman and Amanda Olson, juniors Shannon Maiers, Emily Saba and Cody Block along with ninth-grader Alison Doyle.
Two new forwards are ninth-grader Anna Bresnahan and sophomore Natalia Mazzoni.
Returning defenders are junior Gretchen Mach, ninth-grader Casey Mach and junior Lisa Braun.
Ninth-graders Lauren Nelson, Emily Nelson and Nicole Loranger are expected to provide depth at defense.
   Eighth-grader Samantha Olson is Kennedy's back-up goalie.
Kennedy will unveil its new jerseys and revamped varsity squad against Apple Valley at 7p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Bloomington Ice Garden's Rink 3.
The Eagles will play Robbinsdale Cooper at 7p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at New Hope Arena.
Kennedy will battle Dodge County at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Bloomington Ice Garden.
BIG's main Rink 1 has been undrgoing renovations and won't be available until about Nov. 26.
